How to re-think decay and decomposition?
“Saphrotrophs are fungi and other microorganism that solely eat dead or decaying organic matter. They are essentially the decomposers of this world. Without them the world would be a huge heap of trash and the flash of all of that was once alive would be lying around and piling up. Not a very attractive sight to imagine. Saphrotrophs, which are the majority of fungi, don’t only decompose dead matter, they also create new life out of death. They thrive on waste and decay and are, in essence, trash monsters and value-makers at the same time.”
